Another one of our Elixir Gardens Sponsorship winners has written this great article to share with all of our customers.
David tells us all about what he does during Spring to keep his impressive looking lawn at it’s finest.

I used to think that lawn care began around mid-April. It starts by sending some time scraping off encrusted grass, mud and even bits of baler twine from around the underneath of the machine. Followed by the annual battle to try to get the petrol mower started.
Now, I begin in February getting the mower out, putting fresh petrol and oil in. With a bang and a puff of black exhaust smoke we are off giving a quick haircut with the blades set high. This initial cut takes off the high tussocks and gets the stripes back again. This light trim cheers us up by helping to really show off the early bulbs, hellebores and aconites.
Of course, you need to choose your time to do this when it is not wet or frosty. March then follows with getting the scarifier out in order to remove the moss, dethatch the grass, and aerate the lawn. It always amazes me how much is produced when you gather it up into piles with a Springbok rake.
I then use two plastic devices which act as hand extensions in order to load it into a wheelbarrow and then to the compost bins.
This mossy, strawy, grassy combination is wonderful stuff to make into layers with trimmings from the borders. I then give another cut, slightly lower, which collects any scarified remains and gets the sward looking more like a lawn.
If your lawn is manageable, then raking it with a Springbok and spiking it with a fork help to not only dethatch and aerate the lawn but also give you a post-Christmas workout without having to buy a mechanical scarifier.
As we enter May the next step is to use some sort of feed. I get fantastic results with Spring and Summer granular fertiliser and seaweed granules look as though they may be an excellent preparation that is organic and supplies micronutrients.
It is best to apply this when you anticipate rain in the next few days so it is washed in well. If you prefer a bowling green lawn effect then I would opt for Complete Lawn – Weed, and Moss Killer.
We tend to go for one without weed killer, as we sometimes are lucky enough to get bee orchids which just seem to arrive by magic.
The end result is a fantastic, lush and healthy lawn after just two weeks of scarifying Keep an eye out on Elixir gardens social media to see more photos as the season progresses.

Gardening has provided a source of exercise, relaxation, interest and enjoyment for me after my Grandpa taught me to graft apple trees. Having partly retired from careers in medicine I can now spend more time improving it sufficiently to open for charity with the National Garden Scheme. Six greenhouses, vegetables, fruit, borders, trees and a wildlife garden keep me occupied.
