Gardens have been successfully cultivated for thousands of years.
Over the centuries they have provided practical food producing plots, symbols of wealth and tranquil urban spaces to recharge the mind and body.
But what will be the big trends of 2023?
2022 was an odd year from the dry winter through to one of the hottest summers on record. We can clearly see our seasons are changing and the drought last year left many gardens struggling to recover. Many gardeners are now turning to more drought tolerant planting schemes to help combat the dryer weather.
Abelia x grandiflora ‘Glossy abelia’ is a great low maintenance shrub that can survive some of the harshest winters we are likely to face in the UK. It will also thrive in full sun providing a mass of flowers over summer and autumn. The beautiful glossy green foliage will also provide year round colour and give shape and form to a deep bed.
The more naturalistic gardener may prefer to opt for one of the many ornamental grasses which can thrive in dryer conditions. The can range in height from the compact Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’ with its cushions of needle like silvery-blue leaves, to the long and leggy Carex ‘Comans Brozne leaved’. This evergreen sedge will grow up to 60cm tall and forms attractive seed heads amongst the arching bronzed narrow leaves. An additional benefit is the movement and sound of the leaves rubbing past each other in the breeze.
Geum ‘Scarlet Tempest’ is a great flower to add a hot pop of colour to any border. At around 50-60cm tall it makes a great contrast plant and will certainly be right at home in a hot border. However, there is no need to rip the whole garden out and start again. By choosing your plants carefully you can add to your current planting scheme replacing those plants which are struggling to cope with the changing weather.
My local council has been planting many of its grassed open spaces with wildflowers for a few years.
However last year they really pushed this policy out far and wide and wildflower meadows were everywhere you looked. Ox-eye daisy, cowslip, ragged robin, red campion, red clover, musk mallow and wild carrot! Just a few of the beautiful plants that were springing up all over.
A particular favourite of of mine was where a green near my house had been mainly given over to meadow. It was the addition of the liberal amount of dwarf sunflowers which really made this stand out.
Not only are they beautiful spaces to look at, they are great for pollinators whether in a rural or urban setting. There are also no hard and fast rules of how it should look, great for the less fastidious gardener.
With minimal maintenance and no requirement to add fertilisers you can see why this trend will continue.
Many design concepts overlap between different retail sectors. Colour choice is no different and if you want to see what’s hot for the coming year then read on. Twice a year the trending colours from London Fashion Week very much influence not only clothes but interior design. How we decorate inside our homes will naturally in turn spill over into our garden design and planting schemes.
There are parallels with Miranda Priestley’s speech in The Devil Wears Prada where she talks about how trends filter down. If you look at the hot fashion colours for 2023 you will notice that terracotta and other toning colours are going to be big in gardens around the UK. In fashion Cherry Tomato, Persimmon, Iced Mango and Blazing Yellow are all flying the flag for the warming tones of terracotta.
Still not convinced? You will be after checking out the following plants:
Plectranthus hybrid ‘Inferno’ coleus has fiery orange foliage.
Rudbeckia hirta Moroccan Sun Mix has beautiful flowerheads with petals ranging from deep earth tones in the center to yellow petal tips.
Hemerocallis daylily Apricot Sparkles is an early summer bloomer with a more delicate but warm pale apricot petals.
Portulaca oleracea Orange purslane Rio Grande is a tender perennial with a low growing habit and peachy orange petals with contrasting yellow centres.
Of course gardening is subjective, no rights, no wrongs, just whatever makes you happy. However your gardening year turns out the important thing to remember is to have fun with your green space.
