JOBS FOR

JANUARY

Start the New Year as you mean to go on. Wrapping up warmly and getting out doing jobs not only benefits your garden but also is great for boosting both physical and mental health.

We have chosen a few of the top jobs to be doing around the garden this month.

• We are all being encouraged to plant trees. Now is the ideal time to choose a tree, appropriate for your growing space, to add extra interest all year round. Adding a good base fertiliser will also help the tree establish and encourage stronger roots. Don’t forget to stake and tie larger trees to prevent wind rock.

• Get the spring cleaning sorted by throwing open the shed door and getting stuck in. An organised and tidy shed make gardening easier by saving time not having to look for things you need. It is also a good time to check and service mowers, blowers and trimmers.

• Keep your lawn in top shape by applying fertiliser especially created for use in colder weather. It will help toughen the sward and boost resistance against disease. Keep in mind to avoid walking on grass when it is frosty or freezing to avoid damaging the blades of grass.

• Whilst the trees are still dormant apples and pears are just two trees that you can prune but remember to seal the cuts to protect against damp, frost and any harmful bacteria.

• Everyone is becoming more conscious about recycling. So use Christmas present packing in the garden where you can. Break down cardboard boxes to use as a mulch over beds to help keep the ground a couple of degrees warmer in readiness for planting out. Even smaller pieces of bubble wrap can be used to protect container plants prone to frost damage.

• Encourage wildlife in the garden by topping up bird feeding stations with a premium wild bird feed to help our garden friends a helping hand when food is scarce. Remember to keep a supply of fresh water for them, especially when it is freezing.

• Before the growing season gets underway get to grips with any weeds that have been overwintering in your beds and borders.

• Before your planting starts in earnest check your supply of pots, recycling any that are broken. Investing in quality replacements that will last for years will help reduce costs in the future.

• Whilst the trees are still dormant apples and pears are just two trees that you can prune but remember to seal the cuts to protect against damp, frost and any harmful bacteria.

• If you have a garden shredder then put your old Christmas tree to good use by making your own mulch. Or perhaps take advantage of one of the many Christmas tree collection recycling services around the country to stop them going straight to landfill.
