JOBS FOR

NOVEMBER

November is traditionally the month when the weather turns wetter and windier and gardeners will often be found making the most of the time they can get in the garden.

Here are a few of our top jobs to be carrying out in the garden this month:

• Once planters have been emptied why not use the spent compost as a mulch in the garden.

• Making a bonfire is a good way to get rid of pruning’s, branches and twigs, but make sure to give it a thorough check before lighting it in case there are any hedgehogs taking shelter.

• Remove mould and algae from patios and driveways with a hard surface cleaner that will stop any regrowth over the damp winter months.

• Now rainfall is in plentiful supply it is a good time to give the water butt a thorough clean out to remove any build up from the past year.

• Keep the lawn healthy by clearing falling leaves and aerate the grass using a garden fork at about a 70° angle to help air circulation.

• Young trees and roses can be prone to wind rock, so any exposed plants will benefit from being staked or given extra support with tree ties.

• If you are making your own festive wreaths then cut the holly stems you need leaving them in a bucket of water and cover with frost fleece. This will mean you still get the berries before the birds eat them.

• Recheck your stored garlic and onions for any signs of rot. Remove any affected bulbs as soon as you see them.

• Now is the ideal time to plant bare-root trees and shrubs.  Prepare the spoil well using a base dressing of a high quality root feed like our Bumper Crop Mag-Phos Tree & Shrub Remember to stake them especially in exposed areas to prevent wind damage.

• November is the last chance to move any tender perennials, such as dahlias, in to a greenhouse or cold frame. The same applies to plants such as cannas, which should be dug up and the tubers stored in slightly damp compost.

• Early November is ideal for the last of the spring bulb planting. You can make life easier by using a bulb basket to allow for easy lifting next year once they have died back.
