Month:
February to October
Equipment:
40L Standard grow bag
Garden knife
Skill Level:
Beginner
Top Tips:
No extra heating required although if outside it will need to be covered by a cloche or frost fleece to protect it until all risk of frost is over. Remember to cut the leaves high to leave behind the growing points to give you around three additional cuts over a six to eight week period.
Use a standard 40L grow bag. It doesn’t matter if it contains bark as this helps make to aerate the compost and allow better drainage. Peirce drainage holes in on the bottom. Turn over and then neatly cut along one long and two short sides to form a flap.
Use a bamboo cane or similar to break up the compost being careful not to damage the underside of the bag. Make sure all large lumps are broken up to help with root growth of the salad leaves.
Sow the seeds on the surface. If you don’t want to sow single cultivars in bands then consider buying a premixed variety seed pack of salad leaves. Planted in this grow bag are the following hardy varieties:
Mustard ‘Red Giant’ Rocket (Cultivated)
Mustard ‘Golden Streaks’ Tatsoi ‘Kurio’
Mustard ‘Ruby Streaks’ Mizuna
Pak Choi ‘Baraku’ Ruby Chard
Use the end of a cane to agitate the smaller seeds into the surface. Don’t worry if they aren’t covered they will still grow.
Use the end of the cane to push any larger seeds, such as chard, into the surface of the compost. This helps them to anchor into the compost.
Water lightly, don’t over saturate the growbag.
Once watered most of the seed will be covered. Don’t worry if the surface looks a bit lumpy as the texture allows more oxygen to reach the plant roots.
Use the top of the grow bag to cover the seeds – once germinated roll it back out of the way and give the seedlings maximum light. Germination will take place in around 7-10 days from sowing depending on the weather. The first cut of salad should be ready in about five weeks’ time.
