Make Your Own Bath Bombs
Homemade bath bombs are really simple to create and with Christmas on the horizon, they can make a lovely treat for a friend or family member who enjoys a good soak at a fraction of the price of a spa day!
Equipment
- Rubber gloves
- A mould of your choice (this can be yoghurt pots, silicone ice cube, chocolate or cupcake trays or proper bath bomb moulds)
- Whisk
- Wooden spoon & metal spoon
- Mixing bowls
- Jar or bottle with lid (optional)
- Greaseproof paper or a tray
Ingredients
- 130g bicarbonate of soda
- 65g citric acid
- 65g cornflour
- 65g Epsom salts
- 160ml water
- 2 tsp oil (olive, coconut or almond work particularly well)
- 2 tsp essential oil (e.g.: lavender, chamomile, rose, orange, etc)
- A few drops of your chosen food colouring – if you would like to add more than one colour, remember to divide both the dry and wet ingredients accordingly (Optional).
- Dried flowers e.g. lavender, rosemary, orange peel or rose petals, etc. (Optional)
Method
- Whisk your dried ingredients (minus the citric acid) together in a bowl so they are well combined.
- Pour all of the liquid ingredients into a bowl and mix really well until it is combined (tip: you may find a small bottle or jar easier for this as you can shake it to mix the liquids together).
- Pour all of the now mixed liquid slowly and gradually into the dry ingredients and mix with a wooden spoon as you are pouring.
- Add the citric acid once everything is mixed together. You may notice it fizzes slightly – do not worry, this is normal, just mix quickly here. The mixture should now clump together slightly when pressed but still hold its shape – a bit like wet sand. It should be crumbly and not too wet.
- If you would like to add decoration such as peel or flower petals, pop them in the bottom of your mould now.
- Press your mixture into your moulds on top of your decorations and compact well with the back of a spoon. This process is a bit like making a sandcastle in a bucket!
- Leave the mixture to dry in the moulds for a couple of hours then press out on to a layer of greaseproof paper on a tray and leave overnight to dry out.
- Keep your bath bombs dry and in sealed containers at room temperature until you are ready to use them or give them as gifts.
