Lily Beetle
At this time of year your Lilies should be looking beautiful. However, if you have noticed something is eating way at your flowers and leaves, you may have Lily Beetle.
Take a look at the following steps to see how you can deal with these pests and get your flowers looking at their best again.
Signs that you have Lily Beetle
This time of the year the lilies are looking beautiful, but keep a careful eye out for signs of lily beetle larvae. The adult beetles, which are bright red, produce clumps of reddish brown eggs.
Check your leaves closely for anything that resembles the picture shown here.
Signs the eggs have already hatched
These destructive beetles will quite happily munch through the leaves and weaken the plants. The eggs hatch into small maggot like grubs that will eat the leaves whilst they remain hidden underneath their own black, sticky excrement. This also makes them very unattractive to predators.
How to remove the beetles
Use an old kitchen fork, or similar implement, to scrape the eggs and larvae off the off the leaves before they grow into adults.
Eggs can be squashed between your fingers but be careful to make sure to get them all as they have a habit of dropping off into the leaf axils or onto the top of the soil.
After successfully doing so, your lilies will be healthy and happy!
Gardening has provided a source of exercise, relaxation, interest and enjoyment for me after my Grandpa taught me to graft apple trees. Having partly retired from careers in medicine we can now spend more time improving it sufficiently to open for charity with the National Garden Scheme. Six greenhouses, vegetables, fruit, borders, trees and a wildlife garden keep us occupied.
