Jobs to do in the Garden in November
Cold evenings and potentially frosty mornings mean you need to get your plants properly protected for winter. Check out our list of essential autumn jobs to ensure your plants remain healthy as well as disease and pest-free this November…
-November is the perfect month to plant tulip bulbs in compost, ensuring they are at least twice their depth.
-If the weather is mild and your grass continues to grow, you can mow it with the blades raised.
-To protect your potted plants from frost, wrap the pots in bubble insulation, securing it with twine or string, and place them in a slightly sheltered spot in your garden.
-Clear away any fallen leaves around rose bushes and dispose of them, particularly those showing signs of black spot or rust, to minimize the risk of reinfection next year.
-Before the cold weather sets in, plant any bare-root roses, trees, hedges, and shrubs to help them adjust to their new environment.
-Add more horticultural grit around alpine plants now to insulate their roots and keep leaves off damp soil, which can lead to rot.
-Insulate your greenhouse by adding bubble insulation to the walls and roof to protect tender plants and seedlings from frost. On dry, sunny days or after watering, ensure to ventilate the greenhouse to promote air circulation.
-While in your greenhouse, regularly inspect plants for overwintering pests and treat them as necessary.
-Safeguard saplings and young shrubs from pests and harsh weather by using tree guards.
-To stop wingless female moths from climbing tree trunks and laying eggs in the branches, apply glue bands around the trunks now.
-Once fruit bushes like blackcurrants, gooseberries, redcurrants, and whitecurrants are dormant, proceed with pruning them.
-If some perennials are looking quite sparse, trim them back significantly and apply a layer of high-quality compost as mulch around them.
-After the initial frost, dig up dahlia tubers, gladiolus corms, and begonia tubers. Clean them, remove any dead leaves, and store them in dry compost in a cool, frost-free shed or greenhouse throughout winter.
-Shield your cabbages, kale, and other brassicas from birds by covering them with netting.
-Top-heavy brassicas and leafy greens may need support as they grow, so stake them with bamboo canes and gently mound the soil around the base of the stem to prevent wind rock, which can harm the roots.
-Use a lawn aerator or garden fork to aerate your lawn now before winter arrives, enhancing drainage and allowing air to reach the root system.
