Perfect planting for summer containers

Using containers and baskets gives you an almost infinite number of ways to create a beautiful display suitable for any space.

1. Height

Height is an essential element for most containers where you want them to be a real focal point. Here fuchsia ‘Thalia’ has been used at the rear of the pot to immediately draw the eye with its colourful elongated flowers.

2. Colour

Pops of colour come from the petchoa and begonias. Petchoa is a hybrid of the petunia and calibrachoa and give large showy flowers.

3. Trailing interest

Trailing plants such persicaria ‘Red Dragon’ have beautiful variegated leaves that draw the eye down the side of the container and here they have been mixed in with trailing lobelia that in time will form a dense flowery pillow.

4. Softening the scheme

Planting a ‘frothy’ flowering plant such as diascia with help to soften the scheme and pull the whole look together.

Why not try

Mixing containers of single varieties containing one type of your summer favourites with a variety of foliage is another way to create a stunning display. Here I have mixed Zantedeschia (calla lilies), dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, eucomis (pineapple lily) and grasses.

Gardening has provided a source of exercise, relaxation, interest and enjoyment for me after my Grandpa taught me to graft apple trees. Having partly retired from careers in medicine we can now spend more time improving it sufficiently to open for charity with the National Garden Scheme. Six greenhouses, vegetables, fruit, borders, trees and a wildlife garden keep us occupied.
