How to:
Top Dress
Brassicas

It’s been four weeks since I planted my brassicas but there’s still some jobs to do.
Once I roll back the frost fleece there are three key jobs to guarantee success.

Weeding

My crop has established well and due to the dry weather weed growth has been minimal. A quick hoeing soon removed the few dead nettles that had grown.

This simple, but effective job ensures the brassicas aren’t competing with weeds for nutrients.

Top Dressing

Nitrogen, and calcium are extremely important for all brassicas. The sandy soil in my garden is prone to low levels of organic matter and also naturally lacks boron.

Low levels or this mineral can lead to soft brown rots and poor head formation in cauliflower. All three of these nutrients are found in a specially formulated blended quick release fertiliser.

The make up of this fertiliser allows for the roots to quickly take up the benefits it offers.

I supply around half of the nitrogen requirement for the crop in the seedbed with the balance of 65 grams of Pro Grower Quick Release Veg & Brassica per square metre once the crop is growing actively. Splitting the dressing in this way maintains growth when crop demand is at the maximum. It also reduces the amount of nitrogen leached by rainfall and prevents sudden growth surges before the plant is established.

Check for Pests & Diseases

Even though I had protected the crop with fleece there was some pest damage evident. When checking it became evident that this wasn’t damage from Cabbage White butterfly or slugs.  This damage was being caused by a lesser known, and equally destructive brassica pest, the Cabbage Moth caterpillar. I had to delay planting due to the hot weather, which is where the problem occurred. It appears that the moths laid their eggs on the leaves whilst the plants were still in the greenhouse. After being planted out they then had the protection of the fleece to flourish!

The cauliflowers usually attract more pests than other brassicas and are the worst affected. Fortunately there has only been some sporadic damage my other brassicas, including the brussels sprout.  Cabbage moth caterpillars are olive brown in colour and tend to congregate on the backs of leaves or near the growing points.  They will eat it away completely, and for this reason I think that for this year’s harvest the yield from the cauliflowers will be poor.

Applying Insecticides

Whilst I haven’t needed to spray with an insecticide for several years due to the fleece covers, this year has been an exception. To minimise any further damage to the growing points I decided to spray with Resolva Bug Killer diluted to the manufacturers recommendations and sprayed in the evening to give maximum affect and minimise any harm to non-target species.

Completion of these three very important jobs will hopefully mean that when the covers next come off I will be about to harvest the first heads of delicious Calabrese.

I’m based in Shropshire, and I’ve been a keen gardener since childhood. Throughout my career I have raised plants commercially, landscaped gardens, taught horticulture, built the odd show garden and managed public parks where I helped popularise the use of wildflowers. My passion has always remained with growing fruit and vegetables in my own garden and looking after my rare breed chickens.
