JOBS FOR

NOVEMBER

As we head closer to winter, the weather starts to get colder and wetter but November can offer us some beautiful sunny autumn days too. Take advantage of these dry days by getting out in your garden and preparing for winter with our tips below.

– After the first frost, lift dahlia tubers, gladiolus corms and begonias tubers. Clean them off, remove any dead foliage and store in dry compost in a cool frost-proof shed or greenhouse over winter.

– November is the ideal time to plant tulip bulbs in compost to at least twice their depth.

– Before the weather really turns cold, plant any bare-root roses, trees, hedging and shrubs so they can acclimatise to their new location.

– Remove any fallen leaves from the base of rose bushes and bin them, especially those affected by black spot or rust to reduce the risk of reinfection next year.

– If you have some perennials that are looking really straggly, cut them right down and mulch around them with a good quality compost.

– Help to prevent your pot plants from sustaining frost damage by wrapping the pots in bubble insulation. Use twine or string to hold it in place and position them in a slightly sheltered place in your garden.

– Protect any saplings and young shrubs from pests and harsh weather conditions by using tree guards.

– Apply more horticultural grit around alpines now to help insulate the roots as well as keeping leaves off damp soil which can cause them to rot.

– Once they are dormant, prune fruit bushes such as blackcurrants, gooseberries, redcurrants and whitecurrants.

– Garlic, shallot and onions can be planted now in free draining soil. Cover with fleece until they are well rooted in to prevent birds from digging up new plantings.

– Protect your cabbages, kale and other brassicas from birds by covering with a layer of netting.

– Top heavy brassicas and leafy green plants may need some support as they grow so stake with bamboo canes and gather up the soil around the base of the stem slightly. This will help to prevent wind rock which can damage the roots.

– Prevent wingless female moths from climbing the trunks of trees and laying her eggs in the branches by applying glue bands to trees now.

– Apply bubble insulation to the walls and roof greenhouse now to help prevent frost damage to tender plants and seedlings. On dry sunny days or after watering, still ventilate your greenhouse to allow air to flow through.

– Whilst in your greenhouse, check the plants often for overwintering pests and treat accordingly.

– Monitor the temperature in your greenhouse and ensure the heating system is in good working order. Need a new one – check out our range of heaters here.

– When the weather is mild, if your grass is still growing, you can cut it with raised mower blades.

– Use a lawn aerator or garden fork to aerate your lawn now before winter sets in to improve drainage and to let air get to the root system.
