Soil Warming Cables with Thermostats

Soil Warming Cables are the ideal way to propagate seeds and cuttings on a greenhouse bench or in a cold frame. The soil in the greenhouse takes time to warm up naturally; with a warming cable you are able to plant earlier and raise better specimens. A simple frame can be constructed from wood and lined with polythene to form the propagating area. The cable is then laid onto a 5cm bed of sharp sand (horticultural) and covered with a further 5cm of sand. They are water and moisture resistant which makes them ideal for use with indoor propagators. The soil cables provide constant heat and so the temperature of the soil should be constantly monitored & controlled by a thermostat. Our cables come in various sizes and wattage.

Calculating your required cable size:

The recommended gap between cable runs is bewtween 5cm-8cm. Smaller gaps between your cable runs will create a higher temperature. To calculate the area of your growing bed or seed tray we recommend measuring the length of your growing area in centimetres and dividing by 5. Then multiply this number by the width of your area, again in centimetres. This will give you the total length of cable you require (you will also need to add a little on depending on how close how power outlet is).

Our growing bed size is 100cm x 50cm. Divide the 100cm length by 5cm. This gives us 20cm runs of cable. Multiply this number by the length (50cm). This gives a minimum cable length required of 1000cm (10m).

Important:

DO NOT use if the cable is broken, creased or cut. Cable can be ± 10cm in length. When heater is in use DO NOT cover with heat sensitive material.
