JOBS FOR

DECEMBER

As 2021 draws to a close, check out a few of our suggestions to make the most of the daylight hours in the garden.

  • Make sure to clean away leaves from around the rose bushes to help prevent black spot and rust next year.
  • Make a compost trench by filling it with fresh kitchen waste (nothing cooked) then covering it over. By Spring it will have rotted down and your beans get a good head start on the year.
  • Clean driveways and paths with jet wash or use an easy clean patio cleaner to remove any slimy patches that can become very slippery over the winter.
  • Keep bird feeders topped up with seed to help wildlife over the coldest months.
  • Find a nice day to spike your lawn to keep it aerated to improve root strength, allow winter lawn fertiliser to get into the soil more effectively and improve drainage.
  • If the weather is mild you may need give the lawn another cut. If you do remember to raise the height of the blades.
  • Winter is the ideal time for pruning and washing fruit trees, Japanese maples and roses. Get this done with our Winter Tree Wash and Prune & Seal.
  • Protect your outdoor potted plants from the worst of the winter weather by grouping them together in a sheltered spot, using frost fleece to add a bit more protection where needed.  Grouping them together will also help protect the roots from the worst of the frost.
  • Keep greenhouse roofs clear of snow to prevent any possible damage to glass panes.
  • Applying glue band traps to the trunks of fruit trees will help to protects trees from winter moths, ants, earwigs and other crawling insects that may lay their eggs in the branches.

And finally, our top tip this Christmas

  • Many of your favourite sweet wrappers are made from home compostable cellulose. Check on your tubs of Roses or Quality Street and you will see the wrappers are OK to be popped in the compost bin whilst the foil can be recycled.
