JOBS FOR

FEBRUARY

It is time to enjoy more time in the garden as the days start to get longer. The mild weather has seen blubs and plants starting to burst through giving us the first hint of what is to come.

We have chosen a few of the top jobs to be doing around the garden this month.

  • Take some time to trim back deciduous hedging this month, as it won’t be long until birds start nesting.

  • Before you get hands deep in compost sowing seeds for the new season take time to prepare your pots and trays. Soak your pots in warms water and detergent and give them a good scrub and final rinse before reusing this season.

  • The next couple of months can be a challenge for wildlife in the garden as old food sources dwindle before new ones start to appear. Keep feeding the birds with a quality seed mix or fat balls.

  • It is time to start chitting potatoes now ready to plant out from mid March.

  • Lift your snowdrops whilst they are still ‘in the green’ to create more plants or relocate them.

  • Tidy up dead grass from your evergreen grasses and cut back any deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter ready for new growth to come through.
  • Build up raised beds now ready for the growing season. It will allow the soil to warm up more quickly as well as improve drainage (great if you have heavier clay soil). This may mean you get a week or two head start on the season.

  • Prune you autumn fruiting raspberry canes this month if you haven’t done so already. This will encourage new growth ready for cropping autumn.

  • Stop winter-flowering heathers from getting leggy and woody by trimming back after they have stopped flowering.

  • Get ready for sowing season by organising your seeds by date for earliest sowing. Airtight containers are usually best for storing seed packets, which can then be sectioned by month with some cardboard dividers.

  • A little prep now can go a long way. Get beds ready to use by warming the soil up with polythene or fleece laid flat or used over cloche frames.
