It is time to enjoy more time in the garden as the days start to get longer. The mild weather has seen blubs and plants starting to burst through giving us the first hint of what is to come.
We have chosen a few of the top jobs to be doing around the garden this month.
It is time to enjoy more time in the garden as the days start to get longer. The mild weather has seen blubs and plants starting to burst through giving us the first hint of what is to come.
We have chosen a few of the top jobs to be doing around the garden this month.
- Get out and tackle those weeds which have grown over the generally mild weather we have had. Once removed mulch your beds with a 5cm depth of well rotted compost or leaf mould.
- Add cane supports now to those plants that will need them over future weeks. This helps encourage stronger plants and avoids wind damage.
- If you planted green manure then now is the time to dig them in before they start to toughen up and become harder to break down in the soil.
- Feed Blueberry bushes with ericaceous feed before the leaves have grown in to give plenty of time for the bush to absorb the fertiliser before active growing starts.
- It is time to top dress patio containers by removing 2-3cm of soil from the top and replace it with fresh compost.
- With new growth comes the emergence of slugs, looking for an opportunistic fix of fresh green foliage. Our slug pellets are an effective control approved by the Organic Farmers and Growers.
- Tidy up borders by dead heading spent spring bulbs but leave the foliage to die back before removing.
- When mulching fruit trees with garden compost make sure to leave around 5cm space around the base of the tree trunk.
