Here are a few of our top jobs to do in the garden and down on the plot this month.
- The heatwave has triggered a false autumn for many trees. Ensure that ponds are netted to prevent them becoming clogged with leaf debris.
- Plant bulbs ready for the spring using our easy lift Bulb Baskets and Bulb Starter fertiliser to build up strong root systems. Find them here.
- Using pesticide free glue bands now will help protect trees from problems that ants, moths and other crawling insects can cause.
- Plant out your garlic bulbs and onion sets using a high phosphorous base fertiliser to revitalise the soil in readiness for the spring.
- October is the ideal month to prune climbing and rambling roses after flowering. Take the opportunity to also tie in the stems to prevent damage from autumn and winter winds.
- Sow carrots during the first half of the month to overwinter as seedlings.
- As the weather cools protect tender outdoor plants with frost fleece.
- Tidy borders and remove summer bedding ready to plant up with winter bedding plants.
- Prepare the ground where you will plant bare root hedging with a quality soil improver or specialist tree, shrub and hedge fertiliser.
- Give the greenhouse a deep clean before putting up a triple laminated bubble insulation to protect overwintering plants and seedlings.
