JOBS FOR
SEPTEMBER
The changing colours in the garden bring a whole new look and later harvests of fruits and vegetables will fill plates, freezers and jars in abundance.
Here are just a few of the jobs to think about in September:
- Cooler days are the ideal time to get your lawn ready for winter with an autumn feed with the ideal NPK to toughen up the grass against harsh weather and increase disease resistance.
- Prepare for next year by taking time to collect hardy annual and perennial plant seeds ready for future sowing.
- Get digging and lift those last potatoes to reduce the chance of slug damage.
- Now is the time to clear your pond of any weeds that have built up before netting to prevent problems with autumn leaf fall.
- Give you greenhouse and cold frame a thorough clean out to get them ready for your autumn planting and sowing.
- Get spring bulbs planted now to give a burst of colour early next season. Make things easy on yourself and use a bulb basket to allow you to lift them after they have flowered and died back. We also stock a brand new Bulb Starter fertiliser for stronger root development and fuller blooms.
- Lift squash and pumpkins off the ground to prevent rotting by placing on straw, wood or slate and thin out large leaves to allow the autumn sunshine to ripen them ready for Halloween.

- As the days get cooler grass growth slows so raise the height of lawn mower blades.
- It’s time to put pen to paper and make sketches of what you want to plant next year. Pay attention to what worked well and what didn’t to make sure you plant with success in mind.
