JOBS FOR

JANUARY

Cold winter days are no excuse to be sitting back waiting for the warmer weather.

We have chosen a few of the top jobs to be doing around the garden this month.

  • Late January is the time to be feeding any new plantings with a quality slow release fertiliser such as fish blood and bone. Did you know that FBB is also great to help with soil contaminated with petrol, diesel or oil as it feeds the beneficial bacteria that break down these contaminants.

  • Keep feeding the wildlife in the gardens and make sure that bird baths are topped up with fresh water.

  • The start of the year is an ideal time to plant bare root roses and shrubs but avoid planting them when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

  • If you haven’t yet done so then planning ahead for the new season will reap the rewards later. Buy your seeds now so that they are to hand as soon as the weather improves. Having a week or two head start on sowing can make a world of difference to your garden or allotment.

  • If you left pruning your apple and pear trees then there is still time to do this now whilst the trees are still dormant.
  • Keep a regular check on and supports and plant ties as well as frost protection to make sure there is no weather damage that might adversely affect your plants.

  • If you still have any fruit and veg in storage from last year keep a regular check on them and remove any that are showing signs of rot or disease an use pest control to stop damage from mice.

  • Flowers like geraniums, begonia and dianthus, which need a longer growing period before flowering, can be started now in greenhouses and even on the windowsill.

  • Does your petrol lawnmower need a service? Or maybe the lawnmower blades would benefit from a clean and sharpen. January is a great time to get these things sorted in time for the new season.

  • It is time to shred your real Christmas tree for use as a mulch. Or perhaps take advantage of one of the many Christmas tree collection recycling services around the country to stop then going straight to landfill.
