JOBS FOR

AUGUST

As summer reaches its climax our gardens, allotments, window boxes and patio containers are bursting with colour and those long awaited crops are delivering baskets full of produce. As we know, this all happens because of the time you invest in your green space twelve months of the year.

Here are just a few of the jobs to think about in August:

  • Watering rhododendrons and camellias well this month as this will ensure the healthy growth of next year’s buds.
  • Dead-heading bedding plants and perennials will help to stop them self-seeding and encourage more blooms into the autumn months.
  • Prune wisteria after flowering by pruning all this year’s long shoots back to 6-8 inches long.
  • Spray ground elder (and other perennial weeds) with a glyphosate-based weed killer such as Barclay Gallup or a fuss free ready mixed weedkiller.
  • Keep feeding tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and don’t forget to remove those lower leaves to help increase air circulation and prevent disease.
  • Pinch out the tops of tomato plants to concentrate growth into the tomatoes that have already formed. Try to leave 5 or 6 trusses of tomatoes per plant.
  • Plants fruiting in containers will benefit from a high potash liquid feed to keep them healthy and lengthen the period of fruiting.
  • Protect fruiting bushes from birds and squirrels with netting.

  • Start to harvest your fruit trees — peach, cherry, apricots are just a few varieties which should be ripe and ready for picking. Early apple varieties will be ready towards the end of August.
  • Increase humidity in the greenhouse by damping down, this will help to stop red spider mites.

  • Hanging sticky traps to catch flying pests. Not only does this help reduce pest numbers it can also help you work better out which type of pest control is needed.
  • Recycling water by collecting washing up water or even bath water is a great way to help the environment when the water butts are running low.
  • Watch out for white powdery mildew on plants. If possible, remove the affected parts and use a natural product such as Sulphur powder which will help to stop further spread.
  • Prevent slugs attacking your young plants by using slug control which is certified by the Organic Farmers and Growers Association.
  • Order bulbs now ready for autumn planting.
