JOBS FOR

FEBRUARY

With the worst of Winter over it’s time to start thinking about the upcoming growing season and getting the garden prepped for Spring.

Take a look at our jobs for February for garden inspiration as the days grow longer and milder.

JOBS FOR

FEBRUARY

Start the New Year as you mean to go on. Wrapping up warmly and getting out doing jobs not only benefits your garden but also is great for boosting both physical and mental health.

We have chosen a few of the top jobs to be doing around the garden this month.

  • Finish pruning any fruit trees such as apples, raspberries and blackcurrants. A good Pruning Sealant is recommended to protect exposed bark.
  • Giving a light top dressing of Sulphate of Potash around the base of the fruit tree trunks will encourage healthy fruiting.
  • Conditions for wildlife can still be harsh during February. Ensure bird boxes or feeders are topped up with a good quality Bird Seed Mix to keep them well fed throughout Winter.
  • Prevent fungal disease by removing yellowed and dying leaves from over-wintering plants.
  • Thoroughly clean greenhouse glazing to allow as much light as possible onto developing plants. Consider installing Bubble Insulation to keep any newly planted seedlings protected from frost. Tube Heaters can also be used to keep a consistent ambient temperature within the greenhouse, and controlled accurately with Plug-In Thermostats.
  • It’s the perfect time to sow many flowers such as sweet peas, dahlias, lobelia and snapdragons. Use Tubers or Deep Rootrainers to encourage strong root and stem systems to form.
  • Protect any early flowering or fruiting plants with Frost Fleece.
  • Get containers potted up with hardy spring bedding plants like primroses, wallflowers and forget-me-nots.
  • Slow-Release Fertiliser is an ideal top-up feed for roses and flowering bushes. Apply around the base of the shrub. Use a suitable granular top dressing.
  • Cut back ornamental grasses left over Winter, so that fresh shoots can appear for Spring.
  • Sow tomato and chilli plants in Seed Trays or Propagators. Keep them warm either with a Soil Warming Cable or place them near a window with good sunlight.
  • Prep garden borders and planting beds with a good quality Compost, Animal Manure or Soil Improver.
  • Be sure to give pots, seed trays and plant support equipment such as canes and ties a good clean in warm water and detergent before using them for the new season.
  • Sort your seed packets by sowing date for easy planting and consider acquiring some Plant Labels to keep plants organised.
  • Trim back any climbing plants if they are outgrowing their space, before birds start to nest.
  • Rake Lime into soils that are acidic.
  • Mulch perennial vegetables like asparagus, artichoke and rhubarb, with a good layer of garden compost.
