Scotch Bonnet Chilli Growing Kit

Grow your own Scotch Bonnet chillies from seed with this practical growing kit. It contains the essentials you need to get started, whether you’re an experienced gardener or simply fancy having a go at growing your own hot chillies.

Scotch Bonnets are well known for their intense heat and distinctive fruity flavour. Therefore, they’re a popular choice for homemade sauces, marinades, Caribbean-inspired dishes and plenty of other chilli-based recipes. Best of all, you can pick your home-grown chillies as and when you need them.

Everything You Need to Get Started

The kit contains approximately 50 Scotch Bonnet chilli seeds, 10 terracotta pots, 10 matching terracotta saucers and five 1 litre coco coir blocks. In addition, you’ll find basic growing instructions on the box label to help you get your Scotch Bonnet plants off to a good start.

You can start the seeds indoors on a warm, sunny windowsill or grow them in a greenhouse. Then, as the young plants develop, you can transfer them into larger pots or planters to give their roots more room to grow.

How to Sow Your Scotch Bonnet Seeds

To begin, hydrate each coco coir block with approximately 250ml of water. Once the coir has fully expanded, each block will provide enough growing medium for approximately two of the supplied pots.

Next, fill the pots with the hydrated coir and place each one onto a matching saucer. Sow two Scotch Bonnet seeds into each pot and then lightly cover them with a sprinkling of hydrated coir.

After sowing, place the pots somewhere warm and bright. A sunny windowsill works particularly well; alternatively, you can start them in a suitable greenhouse.

Germination and Growing Conditions

For the best chance of successful germination, maintain a temperature of approximately 18–21°C. At the same time, keep the coir moist so that the seeds don’t dry out. However, avoid overwatering because waterlogged coir can create poor growing conditions.

Germination will usually take around 1–2 weeks. Afterwards, allow the seedlings to continue growing until they reach approximately 10cm (4″) in height.

At this stage, select the strongest-looking seedling from each pot and transplant it into a larger pot or planter. This will give the developing plant more space as it matures.

Feeding and Harvesting

Once the first fruits have set, feed your Scotch Bonnet plants once a week with a suitable tomato fertiliser. As the chillies develop and ripen, harvest the fruits as required.

You can then use your home-grown Scotch Bonnets for cooking, sauces, marinades and a wide range of chilli-based recipes. Their characteristic combination of high heat and fruity flavour makes them particularly popular with anyone who enjoys seriously hot chillies.
